RTSS 2006 Travel Grants

Thanks to the NSF (National Science Foundation), RTSS 2006 is able to offer travel grants for junior faculty and for students from any research institution in the USA.

For both programs, the required documentation should be

sent by email, no later than October 2, 2006, 17:00 EDT
to the Grant Program Chair at rtss06-travel@cs.pitt.edu

in ASCII (highly preferable), or PDF format. Late submissions, or documents in other formats will not be accepted.

The purpose of RTSS travel grants are to encourage graduate students and young faculty members to participate in the exciting technical programs of RTSS and to increase diversity at the conference.  The grants are offered to faculty members early in their careers (at most five years of full-time, full-level [non-postdoc] post-PhD employment), particularly those from under-represented institutions. Dispersement of grants will be based on need and impact of the applicant's attendance in increasing the diversity of conference participation.

Similarly, student travel grants will encourage graduate student participation at the conference by partially funding the costs of students who would otherwise be unable to attend.  Applications are accepted from students at degree granting institutions throughout the USA.  The committee strongly prefers to give grants to students who are not paper authors (the committee believes that for paper authors, costs should be covered by the advisor or university).  Other contributors, however, are encouraged to apply. Other criteria will include evidence of a serious interest in real-time computing, as demonstrated by coursework and project experience. Normally, no more than one student will be funded from each school.  RTSS encourages participation of women and under-represented minorities.

What is covered

The maximum amount of support provided to each grantee is set by the committee, and it is intended to partially cover the grantee's lodging and full registration.  Travel may or may not be partially covered depending on the total availability of funds and the number of awards given.

The grants will be handled via reimbursement by check in US Dollars. For any expense that is covered, a receipt is required. An expense report form and other required forms will have to be turned in after the conference. The reimbursement will be sent as check via mail six to eight weeks after the documents are received. The details will be announced to the award recipients.

How to apply for a travel grant

Students: An application for a travel grant will consist of a letter (maximum of 1 pages, ascii or pdf only) from the applicant, and a recommendation letter from the student's advisor (maximum of 1 page, again ascii or pdf only). The letter from the student should:

  • Indicate their affiliation and any other personal information the student feels is relevant to support their case.
  • Include a brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date, and plans for future research.
  • Include a short (1/2 page max) vita, containing relevant coursework and grades.

The letter from the student's advisor (maximum of 1 page, again ascii or pdf only) should:

  • Confirm that the student is a Ph.D. candidate in good standing (one sentence)
  • Indicate why the candidate would benefit from attending the conference and why the conference would benefit from the candidate's participation;
  • Elaborate on the strengths and potential contributions of the candidate;
  • Indicate current funding status (including Department funds), and explain briefly why the student is in need of a travel grant.

Junior Faculty: the faculty member should send a letter (maximum of 1 page) to the committee. This letter should:

  • Indicate their affiliation and any other personal information they feel is relevant to support their case.
  • Include a brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date, and plans for future research.
  • Include a summary of the CV or a link to your webpage.
  • Indicate why they would benefit from attending the conference and why the conference would benefit from their participation;
  • Elaborate on their strengths and potential contributions;
  • Indicate current funding status (including Departament funds available), and explain briefly why they are in need of a travel grant.

Send application and recommendation letter by e-mail to:
rtss06-travel@cs.pitt.edu in ASCII (highly preferable), or PDF (US letter or A4, 11pt font, 1 inch margins). No other formats will be processed.
