Work in Progress Session
for the 26th IEEE International Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS 2005)

Call for Papers

The WIP session is devoted to the presentation of new and on-going research in real-time systems, theory, and applications. The primary purpose of the WIP session is to provide researchers with an opportunity to discuss their evolving ideas and gather feedback from the real-time community at large. Of particular interest are ideas and contributions that present significant paradigm shifts, explore unique and unconventional approaches to important problems, or investigate fundamental departures from conventional wisdom in adopted solutions. WIP topics include, but are not limited to:

  • QoS support
  • Compiler support
  • Model-based development
  • Embedded operating systems
  • Energy management
  • System development tools
  • Real-time systems middleware
  • Software engineering
  • Adaptive systems theory and practice
  • Real-time databases
  • Real-time sensor/actuator networks
  • RT programming languages
  • Security and survivability
  • Scheduling
  • Real-time and dependability
  • Formal methods
  • Wireless communications
  • Case-studies
  • Multimedia computing
  • Systems integration
  • Architectural support
  • Performance modeling

The RTSS 2005 WIP session will be held during the symposium which runs December 5-8 2005 in Miami, Florida. Accepted submissions will be included in a separate RTSS 2005 WIP Proceedings which will be distributed to all RTSS 2005 conference participants and will be available electronically from the conference home page, as well as from the IEEE TC-RTS home page.  There will be an opportunity to show your accepted WIP paper in a poster session, in addition to the usual short oral presentation session.

Submissions to RTSS 2005 WIP should describe original on-going work.

Important dates

  • Extended deadline for submissions: Monday, October 10, 2005 Per request extended to Monday, October 17, 2005
  • Notification of acceptance: Friday, November 18, 2005
  • Deadline for submission of camera-ready copy: Friday, November 25, 2005

Formatting

  • Submissions must not exceed four pages including references and figures -- papers exceeding four pages will not be reviewed.
  • Papers should be formatted as single-space, double-column, in a 10 point font.
  • All submissions should be in PostScript (PS) or PDF. Please do not submit papers in MS Word or other formats.
  • Please try to ensure the absence of bitmapped (type 3) fonts in your submission; they make life difficult for reviewers. For more information see this page, this page, or this page.

Submission Instructions

  • Submit your paper electronically, here: https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/rtss2005 (Submission Closed)
  • Please send in your final paper to Dakai Zhu (dzhu@cs.utsa.edu).

Instructions for Presenters:

Each presenter will be given 5 minutes, INCLUDING SETUP TIME. It is essential that you make effective use of this time. First, prepare a short talk (we suggest a maximum of 3 slides + title slide). You should convey one or two important ideas about your work. You will not be able to give a really fast version of a regular-length talk, please do not attempt to do this. Second, you should attempt to minimize transition time by ensuring ahead of time that your laptop works with the projector and that you understand how to use the microphone. Also, WIP presenters may want to put multiple presentations on a single laptop.

The point of the WIP session is for the audience to get a rapid-fire stream of up-and-coming research ideas. Our experience is that a WIP session is fun and interesting to attend only if each speaker has really figured out a few key points to make, and makes them quickly. In other words, it's far better to give a memorable talk instead of a lot of details.

A few other details:

.
posters session is planned for WiP papers
. no questions/answers during the WIP presentations

Before the conference, please direct questions to Haifeng Zhu (haifengz@cs.cmu.edu). During the conference itself please address questions to Dakai Zhu (dzhu@cs.utsa.edu).
